Barney Harwood has been in touch to tell us about a recent trip he took for Blue Peter to check out the Forth Bridge in Scotland…

“I thought you may like to hear about a recent trip I took to Scotland.

In a nutshell, they have a bridge there!

Forth Bridge by Barney HarwoodNow, you may be thinking “big deal” but what if I told you that the rivets (all 6.5 million of them) that hold the whole thing together, were put in by a load of 10 years olds in 1883!

I’m talking about the Forth Bridge in Queensferry in Scotland! Since I was a little boy, I have driven over the road bridge many times to see relatives, so I have fond memories of the Forth rail bridge that stands alongside it.

I never thought that I would get the chance to stand on top of it though!

We went to the bridge to not only talk about its Victorian engineering and to celebrate its many workers and staff who have cared for it over the years, but to also talk about its latest paint job!

The bridge is made of steel and so it rusts quickly. This new paint job is amazing and has been designed specifically so that it will not need painting again for 25 years!

There is also rumour of a golden rivet laid by a member of royalty but as yet, no one has ever found it amongst the 6.5 million that sit there freshly painted!

So we awarded the real golden rivet or Blue Peter Gold badge to honour the achievement of such an amazing bridge that will still be here in another 125 years!”

Barney Harwood is presenting the BAFTA Children’s Awards on Sunday 27th November. Head back to www.baftakidsvote.org on Monday to see all the highlights from Awards show.
